Getting around – State residents age 50-plus have optimistic but unrealistic attitudes about the availability of public transportation and how they will get around as they age, a recent survey shows. The report, “Mobility Challenges for the 50 Plus: Suggestions for Improvement,” was prepared for AARP New Mexico and the state Department of Transportation. Respondents were largely satisfied with current public transportation services, although only 7 percent had used such services in the previous month. Most of those who do not use public transportation cited inconvenience as the reason. AARP New Mexico has launched a coalition to identify transportation challenges and to lobby the legislature for transportation funding. Healthy choices – Nearly two-thirds of AARP New Mexico members would support an increase in state taxes if it's needed to provide affordable, quality health care for all state residents, a recent AARP survey found. Among the other findings: 85 percent of members want the state to take action to make health care affordable, and 80 percent say making prescription drugs more affordable should be a top AARP priority. The survey results were released as the legislature prepared to take up health care reform. Gov. Bill Richardson, D, has proposed reforms based on a task force's recommendations, but AARP New Mexico supports stronger long-term care and chronic care provisions than the governor recommended.
