AARP New Mexico Conducts Shredding Day to Kick-Off Create the Good Initiative

In hard economic times sometimes all you need to do to feel better is to hold out a hand to someone else – for a few minutes, a few hours or a few days.
This is the concept behind AARP’s new initiative called Create the Good. Create the Good encourages people to give back to their community, to each other, in a variety of ways and as a result connect with their neighbors and become more engaged in their communities.
AARP New Mexico will kick off its Create the Good initiative with a free document shredding event featuring presentations on ways to thwart identity theft and fraud in Las Cruces, Saturday, Sept. 12th, from 9 a.m. to noon, at the WIA Building, at 340 N. Reymond St.
“We’re hoping to show people that one easy way of helping someone is simply by sharing information,” said Beth Velasquez, AARP New Mexico Associate State Director of Communications. “Sometimes the simplest thing can make someone’s life better or improve a community.”
“For example, at our shredding day we’ll be sharing with people simple everyday steps they can take that will protect them from identity theft. Steps like not giving out personal information over the phone unless you initiate the contact or shredding documents that contain personal information can save someone from being a victim of identity theft – a crime that sometimes can take years to clear up – that’s something that can really benefit people,” Velasquez said.
People who are interested in Creating the Good in their community can go to AARP's Create the Good Website to learn more about ways you can make a difference. Join the Create the Good community to network with others trying to make a difference, stay in the loop, and learn even more ways you can help.
