Finally! The weather has turned and summer is on the way. This can be one of the most heavily traveled times of the year, as people rush into the sun for their vacations. New Jersey police are already making preparations to deal with the clogged roads and dangerous conditions, because along with the traffic comes a spike in road accidents.

It's a good time to review some of the basic skills and rules that can keep us safe on the road. Since 1979, more than 10 million people have completed the AARP Driver Safety Program.

The AARP Driver Safety Program is available to everyone and focuses on:
• Accident prevention measures, new traffic laws and rules of the road
• How to deal with aggressive drivers and road rage
• How medications may affect driving
• How to safely use anti-lock brakes, air bags and safety belts
• How to minimize distractions, including cell phone use, while driving

The program can also be effective in helping consumers identify signs that older loved ones may need to slow down and drive less. Research shows that, as a group, older drivers are some of the safest on the road, with the lowest crash rates per thousand drivers, lowest rates of alcohol impairment, and the highest rate of seat belt use.

Nevertheless, older drivers can be more physically vulnerable than other drivers. They have higher fatality rates than other age groups, are more likely than younger drivers to be severely injured in an accident, and to have a more difficult recovery. The Driver Safety Course can reduce the risk associated with driving so families feel safer on the road.

As a bonus, many insurance companies offer significant discounts to drivers who have completed this convenient and affordable program. In New Jersey, and driver who completes the course can have two existing points removed from their license.

Classes are offered regularly all across New Jersey.
