The AARP New Jersey State Office is announcing the names of all candidates for political office who have either responded or not responded to a 2007 voter guide questionnaire on four key issues of particular importance to older adults. Each year, AARP asks candidates to provide answers to certain questions as part of a broad-based effort to keep its 1.38 million New Jersey members informed.
"The AARP candidate voter guide is a top priority for our members," said Sy Larson, AARP New Jersey State President. "This is one of the tools we employ every year to keep our membership up to date regarding the candidates' positions on priority issues so that come Election Day, our members can make informed choices at the polls."
This year, out of 263 of candidates for political office, 119 have responded in time for their voter guide responses to be made public on AARP's Web site.
"AARP commends those who responded, but our members are deeply disappointed in the candidates who have failed to answer our questions this year," said Larson.
According to the Census Bureau, prior elections have shown a high turnout of 50+ voters on Election Day. Almost 66% reported voting out of the 71.4% who were registered in 2004.
On Oct. 8, Senator Joe Vitale (D-19) spoke to members of AARP's volunteer speakers bureau on The Power of the Senior Vote.
"As a legislator, I know how important it is to work with organizations like AARP whether I am still a candidate or an elected member of the State Senate," he said. "The AARP voter guide is a fine opportunity for all of us in politics to show where we stand on certain issues and why."
AARP noted that some candidates, such as Nia Gill from District 34, responded to AARP's voter guide request even though they have no opponents this election year. See whether or not YOUR candidates responded.
