In celebration of AARP’s 50th Anniversary and to recognize the outstanding educational achievements in public high schools throughout the nation, AARP New Jersey is announcing the winner of The Ethel Percy Andrus Legacy Awards. AARP New Jersey is donating $10,000 to Somerset County Alternative Academic High School in Raritan, in recognition of its Green Team program.

In 2004, teachers Tamara Hitchcock and Jessica Stibitz sought out students who showed an interest in environmental and community concerns. This small group of students formed what is now known as the “Green Team.” This group has evolved over the years and is now an integral and beneficial contributor to the school and community.

“The Legacy Awards not only pay tribute to the legacy of Dr. Andrus, but also underscore our continued intergenerational commitment to recognize and encourage educational achievements in communities throughout the nation. Congratulations to all of the winning schools,” said AARP CEO Bill Novelli.

AARP was founded 50 years ago by Ethel Percy Andrus, a retired teacher and principal from California. “Dr. Andrus was a champion for all generations who believed, as we do today, that the generations are connected by a strong commitment to values, community and service,” said Novelli.

The Green Team started with a fundraiser to initiate a first-ever yearbook for the school. Next, the group worked successfully to promote a recycling program in the school and a drive to promote environmental awareness.

More successes followed. The Green Team received a grant from the United Way to purchase garden tools, heavy gloves and refuse containers to maintain and improve school grounds. The program soon expanded to a nearby church and several neighboring houses.

The Green Team continues to be involved in environmental concerns and fosters school spirit and a sense of community within the school. The Alternative Academic High School plans to use the Legacy Award money to promote career and higher education awareness by establishing a resource center to assist students in furthering their education in areas that contribute to the environment and the community.

AARP’s 50th Anniversary, “Generations Connecting for Change,” is a year-long, national celebration that highlights the Association’s foundation of leadership and service to others by uniting the generations and building a better future. Throughout 2008, AARP will share its triumphs in igniting change and uniting generations throughout the last half decade.
