Call for Nominations: AARP Andrus Award for Community Service

AARP is seeking nominations for the 2004 AARP Andrus Award for Community Service, AARP's most prestigious volunteer award. Its purpose is to recognize outstanding AARP volunteers and members in every state who are making powerful differences in their communities in ways that are consistent with AARP's mission, vision and commitment to community service.

The AARP Andrus Award for Community Service is an annual awards program developed to honor individuals whose service is a unique and valuable contribution to society. Last year, AARP recognized 53 individuals from around the country, one from each state and territory. -start FOUR In Nebraska, Robert Bathke, a longtime community service volunteer from Omaha, received this top honor.

Eligibility Requirements

AARP Andrus Award for Community Service nominees must meet the following eligibility requirements:

  • Nominees must be current AARP volunteers or members, or must have been AARP volunteers or AARP members within the time period described below.
  • The accomplishments, achievements or service on which the nomination is based must have occurred during the period Jan. 1 - Dec. 31, 2003.
  • The accomplishments, achievements or service on which the nomination is based must have been performed on a volunteer basis, without pay.

Selection Process

The screening of nominees will be performed by a selection committee convened by AARP. A range of criteria will be considered, including:

  • Positive impact on the lives of individuals age 50 and above.
  • Improvement of the community in or for which the work was performed.
  • Focus on AARP's priority areas of economic security , health and supportive services , and/or livable communities .
  • Inspiration for others to volunteer.

The award recipient will be announced after Sept. 1, 2004.

Application Deadline: June 30, 2004
