Doris Dick of Hamptonville is the winner of North Carolina's 2007 Andrus Award for Community Service.
As a longtime AARP volunteer, she has worked on such issues as caregiving and end of life, Medicare rights and benefits, long term care quality and access and safe driving. She is a long time tutor with her local schools as well as serving as a leader in her county's Meals on Wheels program, which she founded. She helped establish the Yadkin County Elder Affairs Department, where she still volunteers some 15 hours per week. She also helped establish the Yadkin County Medical Ministries, helped establish a healthy nutrition program and helped start a Faith in Action program in her community. She serves as a delegate to the NC Senior Tar Heel Legislature, where she also served two terms as Speaker.
"Doris Dick truly walks the walk and is tireless in her efforts to make a difference," said Bob Jackson, AARP North Carolina State Director. "Her life is one of passion and love, and she wonderfully exemplifies the idea that AARP truly has 'The Power to Make it Better.'"
