AARP Missouri Seeks Mobility Issues Volunteer in Kansas City

By: State: Missouri | Source: AARP.org

Are you passionate about better streets and walkable communities? Are you interested in the process of design and planning that places the most value on people and on neighborhoods? Are you interested in being involved in making your community a "Livable Community"? Characteristics of a Livable Community are affordable and appropriate housing, supportive community features and services and adequate mobility options. Livability will only become a reality in our individual communities and neighborhoods if citizens actively promote their choices and move to bring about key changes. Mobility places a key role in livable communities by:

  • Keeping People Connected—Multiple mobility options allow people to connect with their communities
  • Contributing to Successful Aging—Maintains independence and promotes personal empowerment
  • Promoting Civic and Social Engagement—Provides means to contribute to communities as residents, workers, volunteers, and advocates

One of AARP's 10-year social impact goals is that Americans ages 50 and older can sustain mobility as they age. We want to ensure that people have a wide range of mobility options, pursue entrepreneurial approaches with the private sector, and advocate for changes in public policies and transportation policy.

The State Office is currently looking for a volunteer in the Kansas City area with an interest in mobility issues. This volunteer would serve as a citizen participant in the transportation planning process (serve on the KC area Metropolitan Planning Organization—MPO's and rural planning groups). Volunteer would be assigned to attend the monthly meeting on the topic of transit services and addressing the needs of the regions' special populations including the aging, low-income individuals, or person with disabilities. Interested volunteers will be trained in AARP mobility agenda issues including, Complete Streets, Transit Oriented Development, public transportation and para-transit services, rural transportation, and safer road design.

Do you have experience, interest, or first hand knowledge of this issue? Are you interested in being part of the AARP Missouri volunteer team? Please contact Marla Sutton, Associate State Director for Volunteer and Community Development, AARP Missouri, at 360-2209 to find out more.
