AARP to Offer New, Shorter Driver Safety Refresher Course in MI Beginning Fall 2008

Countless lives have been saved because they have participated in the AARP Driver Safety Program (DSP) over the past few years. We don't know how many lives, because we can't count traffic crashes that don't occur. Nevertheless, the statistical probability of this fact is based upon the traffic crash rates for seniors in relationship to the over 6 million DSP participants over the last 10 years.
Since 1979, AARP has offered a driver safety class. The AARP Driver Safety Program is the nation's first and largest refresher course for drivers age 50 and older that has helped millions of drivers remain safe on today's roads.
Beginning in the fall of 2008, AARP will be offering a special new four-hour refresher driver safety course for seniors in Michigan. This new program will be open to all individuals who have completed an eight-hour driver safety course in the last three years and are seeking a quick class to gain updated information. Several Michigan auto insurance companies offer a discount to their clients who complete this refresher course. Please contact your individual insurance agent to find out if your insurance company offers a discount.
"This course is a great way for drivers to refocus on safety," said LeRoy Fladseth, driver safety coordinator for Michigan. "Each of us needs to take responsibility for keeping up our own driving skills and monitoring those of family members, whether young or old. This AARP Driver Safety course is a one-stop way to do that."
The cost of the class is only $10 per person, which includes a certificate upon completion. In order to sign up for the class, individuals need to show their certificate of completion for the eight-hour AARP Driver Safety class they took during one of the last three years.
