September 7, 2008 is Grandparents Day and AARP of Michigan is joining with the Museum of African American History in Detroit and Borders Books in Birmingham to honor grandparents in this state.  In addition to contributing to their communities in a wide variety of ways, many Michigan grandparents spend their time raising their grandchildren.

In Michigan, there are over 183,000 children living in grandparent-headed households or households headed by other relatives.  Of the children living in households headed by grandparents or other relatives in this state, 71,200 are living there without either parent present.
