April 2008
Spend wisely – In a state facing potential budget cuts, AARP Kentucky is urging lawmakers to invest $15 million in expanding home- and community-based services. The money would bolster such programs as Meals on Wheels, adult day care and other services that could help about an additional 16,000 older residents continue to live independently in their own homes.

In Kentucky, it costs on average $4,759 annually to provide an individual with home- and community-based services, compared with $34,453 to provide a year of Medicaid-funded nursing home care.

AARP Kentucky is urging members to call 1-800-372-7181 or go to www.lrc.ky.gov to ask legislators to increase funding for home- and community-based care.

Beef it up – When the legislature convenes in January to begin hashing out a two-year budget, AARP Kentucky staff and volunteers will be at the Capitol every day, urging lawmakers to boost funding for services for people age 60 and older by $15 million.

About 5,000 Kentuckians are on waiting lists for home-delivered meals, and thousands of eligible residents aren't getting adult day care or in-home services. "We need to keep the drumbeat going throughout the session," says Bill Harned, AARP state president.
