Divided We Fail Gains Speed in Illinois

Organizations across Illinois adding to momentum

Americans are struggling to afford the health care they need. In Illinois, the number of uninsured has reached 1.5 million. One in four Americans struggles to pay medical bills and one in three skips treatment, tests or prescriptions because of costs. Forty-seven million Americans are uninsured and middle class families are the fastest growing segment.

Financial security is just as tenuous for too many Americans. National savings are at an all-time low and pension plans are dwindling. Half of all private sector workers are not signed up for a 401(k) or other employer-sponsored retirement plan. For many people, Social Security will be their only reliable, guaranteed retirement income source—but Social Security alone isn’t enough.

That’s why AARP is leading Divided We Fail, a nationwide movement to demand bipartisan action, answers and accountability on health care and lifetime financial security in America. We need to improve the health care system by making it more affordable, boosting quality and eliminating waste.

Across Illinois and the nation, Americans are pledging to support candidates that will present practical solutions to health care and lifetime financial security. People are pressuring candidates to stop speaking in generalities and instead be specific about the solutions they pose by demonstrating a commitment to the American people.

To help raise awareness and educate people about Divided We Fail, AARP volunteers across the state have donated their time and energy to spread the word. By collecting pledges and gaining the commitment of people in Illinois, these volunteers are making strides to ensure that all Americans have access to affordable, quality health care and lifetime financial security.

Several organizations have come together on the issues of health care and financial security by signing the Divided We Fail pledge card. These organizations include:
