Volunteering together has been a second calling for Don and Betty Winston of Windsor Heights, Iowa. While some retires take up golf or travel, this energetic couple has spent their golden years giving back to the community, for which they are receiving AARP’s highest volunteer award for 2009.
AARP Community Ambassador James Brown, known as "JB" to millions of sports fans, is pairing up with AARP to educate Americans on the importance of community service and to encourage them to make a difference by living life to the fullest.
Over 50 years ago, Dr. Ethel Percy Andrus founded AARP with the motto, "To serve, not to be served." Today, AARP continues to serve with more than 9 million volunteers, activists and donors and recently launched Create the Good, a network of people who want to make a difference.

Volunteerism has been a core of AARP since its founding. The Andrus award is given every year in honor of AARP's founder, Dr. Ethel Andrus for exceptional service and volunteerism. The seventh AARP Iowa Andrus Award recognizes Art Gratias and the service he has given his community.
