Get Involved, Make A Difference, Become an AARP Volunteer

"It has been wisely said that whatever many may say about the future, it is ours, not only that it may happen to us, but it is in part made by us."
-Ethel Percy Andrus, Founder AARP

Now, more than ever, we need members to step forward to share their experience and expertise to improve the quality of life for all Iowans. Getting involved in volunteering through AARP is a great way to get to know your community better, meet new people and help improve the lives of your neighbors.

Iowa AARP is looking for members to contribute in a wide variety of ways, from advocacy on the issues of health care and financial security to classroom instruction of Driver Safety information to preparing taxes for low-income Iowans and helping those in need of money management services with basic household money management services. AARP volunteers work flexible hours, receive extensive training and reimbursement for expenses.

We invite you to review our volunteer options and let us know how you'd like to get involved.

Advocacy: Join the Grassroots, Elections and Advocacy Team (GREAT). Whether it's improving the quality of long-term care services, ensuring the solvency of Social Security or helping to make prescription drugs more affordable, AARP volunteers are a powerful voice at the state and national levels. Our GREAT volunteers talk to their legislators, participate in grassroots activities, and work on educating members on the issues. Training is provided to keep GREAT volunteers up-to-date on the latest legislative issues and activity.

Driver Instruction: AARP's Driver Safety Program is the nation's first and largest classroom driver improvement course specially designed for motorists age 50 and older. Volunteers help teach and coordinate the program. Volunteers need to be graduates of the class before receiving the training to teach. Find the location of a class nearest you.

Tax Preparation: If you are good with numbers, enjoy a challenge and working with people, becoming a Tax-Aide volunteer might be right up your alley. Administered through the AARP Foundation, Tax-Aide is the nation's largest volunteer tax counseling preparation service for older taxpayers with low to middle incomes. Volunteers receive extensive IRS training and support. Sign up using the on-line Tax-Aide application.

Money Management: The AARP Foundation's Money Management program helps low-income or disabled individuals manage and keep track of their financial matters. Volunteers help people organize and keep track of financial papers, establish a budget, write checks and balance their checkbooks. They also may serve as a representative payee, with greater responsibility. The program works with state and local community service agencies to help people maintain their financial independence, remain in their homes and provide an added level of protection against financial exploitation.
