A task force created to explore how the state can do a better job of treating and caring for people with Alzheimer's disease and other dementia disorders is meeting this fall and will report recommendations to the Iowa lawmakers by January 1, 2008.
The task force will hear testimony from various interested parties. It is essential that the task force also hear from Iowans who experience day-to-day problems of caring for a family member or friend with Alzheimer's or dementia - and include that information in the report.
The Director of the Iowa Department of Elder Affairs invites public participation by interested parties and consumers to provide input on Alzheimer's disease and its' impact on Iowans.
There are two ways you can participate. You can attend a public meeting on the task force in Des Moines.
- Oct. 29 from 9:30 am to 4 pm; West Des Moines Sheraton 50th and University Ave
- Nov. 19 from 9:30 am to 4 pm; Iowa State Historical Building - 600 E. Locust Ave
- Dec. 10 from 9:30 am to 4 pm. Iowa State Historical Building - 600 E. Locust Ave
Or, you can submit your story online.
These are the questions the task force is looking to answer:
- How is Alzheimer's and related dementia affecting your life?
- How would you like to see Iowa's policy makers improve the condition and availability of services for those with Alzheimer's and related dementia?
The public is invited to attend. Those wishing to make public comments will be allotted three (3) minutes. The public comment period will begin at 2:45 p.m. and end at approximately 3:30 p.m. Written comments can be submitted before or at the meeting and should be no longer than one thousand (1,000) words.
