Get Out and Ride
By: State: Hawaii | Source: AARP.org
Ever think about how to get around without driving a car? Intimidated about taking TheBus or riding a bike? Don’t know about the new Handi-van requirements?
As Hawaii’s population ages and fuel and parking prices continue to rise, it’s important for residents to be familiar and comfortable with transportation alternatives to driving – such as TheBus and Handi-Van. On December 5 the public is invited to attend a free information event designed to shed light on Oahu’s transportation options and how to access them.
AARP Hawaii is sponsoring “Get Out and Ride,” to answer frequently asked questions about public transit options and help residents who want to navigate safely under their own power. The event will be held at the Neil Blaisdell Center’s Pikake Room on Saturday, December 5 (9:15 – 11:30 a.m.). Registration is required. Call 768-7700 or write aarphi@aarp.org to reserve a seat.
This session is part of AARP’s ongoing effort to ensure that our public roadways are designed not only for motor vehicles but for all people in our community—including pedestrians, bicycle riders and those using public transportation. It will begin with a panel presentation featuring speakers from Oahu Transit Services, Honolulu Department of Transportation Services, Van Pool Hawaii, and Island Triathalon and Bike. Each speaker will give a short snapshot of the services offered by their organization.
Participants will have an opportunity to get more information on how to access each service. City buses will also be on hand so that participants can practice loading a bike on the front or utilizing the wheelchair lift.
The session focuses on the following modes of transportation:
- TheBus: Learn how to find the route and schedule you need and how to get a bus pass; get hands-on practice loading a bike or using the wheelchair lift.
- The Handi-Van: Learn about the level of service provided, the new requirements for eligibility, and how much it costs.
- Van Pool Hawaii: Find out how you can save money and share rides to work.
- Bike Riding: Find out about classes to improve your safety and confidence on the road.
- Rail: Understand how rail will work with The Bus, your bike, and other transportation systems.
This event is perfect for working people who are exploring alternative ways to get to work, or for older people who no longer wish to drive. For more information call AARP Hawaii at 545-6003.
