AARP Hawaii is pleased to announce the opening of registration for the Hawaii Caregiver's Conference: Caring for Family, Caring for Yourself to be held at the Sheraton Waikiki Saturday Nov. 1 (8 a.m.–3:30 p.m.).  This non-profit conference is tailored to family and volunteer caregivers and is being held in conjunction with the City and County of Honolulu’s Elderly Affairs Division.

The conference will feature keynote presentations by AARP National President Jennie Chin Hansen and Dr. Bill Thomas of the Eden Alternative. Participants may choose to attend up to three breakout sessions on topics ranging from coping with Alzheimer’s and the legal issues of care-giving, to the challenges of balancing work and caregiving.  The conference will also feature a resource fair and self-care activities like massage and aromatherapy.

By conservative estimate there are more than 106,000 family caregivers in Hawaii, and many people don’t know where to turn for resources that can ease the burden of care. This conference is intended to help caregivers enjoy a higher quality of life by getting connected to supportive information and resources.

Registration is on a first come, first served basis.  There is a $45 conference registration fee for family caregivers, volunteer caregivers and students, and a $60 fee for professionals. For questions please contact the Senior Helpline at 768-7700.

Anyone wishing to volunteer at the conference is asked to contact AARP Hawaii’s Jackie Boland at 545-6003 or jboland@aarp.org. Volunteers will help with registration, introduce speakers and monitor break out sessions.
