AARP Volunteer Inspires, Helps Others

Over 50 years ago, Dr. Ethel Percy Andrus founded AARP with the motto, To serve, not to be served. Today, Maria Campos is the true embodiment of generating positive social change in the world by her dedication to volunteering and serving others.

Campos, who will turn 72 this year, was born in Cuba in 1937. She has lived in South Florida for forty years and as Community Council President of Robert King High Towers, a public housing unit in Miami, she has spent a lot of her time helping other residents and making her community a better place to live. What drives her to give her time to serve others?

“It’s invigorating,” Campos says. “It helps you feel like you have a purpose. It makes people feel really good.”

Campos first came to AARP in 2007 as a Divided We Fail volunteer. Now a volunteer ambassador for AARP’s Miami Project, Campos participates in AARP events in the Hispanic community by managing tables, recruiting other volunteers and visiting State and Federal elected officials to discuss issues that are important to AARP and its members. Campos has also been a key player in the project’s various days of service as well as many community conversations.

According to Campos, being an AARP volunteer has been one of the most incredible experiences of her life. She is grateful to the organization because she believes it has the best interests of older people at heart. It also makes Campos feel good to know that with AARP’s help, she can help others and make a difference in their lives.

Throughout her tenure as an AARP volunteer, Campos has been a part of many important campaigns. But the one that is closest to her heart is the Keep Medicare Fair campaign, where she got the opportunity to travel to the nation’s capital to visit U.S. Reps. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen and Lincoln Diaz Balart to voice her opinions about the Medicare bill on behalf of many others in her community.

“Going to Washington for the Keep Medicare Fair campaign has been the most significant experience for me as an AARP volunteer,” Campos said. “It was rewarding to see the effort that AARP put forth and then see the good results.”

Campos is currently working with AARP on health care reform, making sure that the Hispanic community is aware of the importance of making health care affordable and accessible to all. She takes pride in her work as a volunteer and recommends that others experience the satisfaction that comes from helping those around them.

“I would highly recommend becoming a volunteer,” Campos said. “It fills you and stimulates you to fight for other people who need it. It is good to know that there are so many millions of people fighting for the same thing. Most importantly, it makes me feel young even though I am not that young anymore.”

Campos, que este año cumplirá 72 años, nació en Cuba en 1937. Ha vivido en el sur de Florida por cuarenta años y, como presidenta del Consejo de la Comunidad de Robert King High Towers, una unidad de viviendas públicas de Miami, ha dedicado mucho de su tiempo a ayudar a otros residentes y a hacer de su comunidad un lugar mejor donde vivir. ¿Qué la llevó a dedicar su tiempo a servir a los demás?

“Es estimulante —afirma Campos—. Ayuda a que uno se sienta útil. Hace que la gente se sienta realmente bien.”

Campos llegó a AARP en el 2007, como voluntaria de Divididos Perdemos. Ahora, como embajadora voluntaria del Proyecto Miami de AARP, ella participa en los eventos de AARP en la comunidad latina, administrando mesas, reclutando otros voluntarios, y visitando a los funcionarios estatales y federales electos para debatir temas que son importantes para AARP y sus socios. Campos también ha jugado un papel clave en los varios días de servicio del proyecto, así como en muchas otras conversaciones de la comunidad.

Según Campos, ser voluntaria de AARP ha sido una de las experiencias más increíbles de su vida. Está agradecida a la organización, porque cree que AARP se ocupa verdaderamente de los temas que más les preocupan a los adultos mayores. También la hace sentir bien saber que, con la ayuda de AARP, puede auxiliar a otras personas y marcar una diferencia en sus vidas.

Como voluntaria de AARP, Campos ha formado parte de muchas campañas importantes, pero la que está más cerca de su corazón es Keep Medicare Fair (Mantengan Medicare a un Costo Justo), en la que tuvo la oportunidad de viajar a Washington D.C. para visitar a los representantes de Estados Unidos Ileana Ros-Lehtinen y Lincoln Díaz Balart, para expresarles su opinión acerca del proyecto de ley de Medicare en nombre de muchos otros miembros de su comunidad.

“Para mí, haber viajado a Washington para la campaña Keep Medicare Fair ha sido la experiencia más significativa como voluntaria de AARP —señaló Campos—. Fue gratificante haber sido testigo del esfuerzo que AARP realizó y, luego, ver los buenos resultados.”

Actualmente, Campos está trabajando con AARP en la reforma del sistema de salud, asegurándose de que la comunidad latina esté al tanto de la importancia de lograr que el cuidado de la salud sea asequible para todos. Se siente orgullosa de su trabajo como voluntaria y recomienda que otros experimenten la satisfacción de ayudar a quienes los rodean.

“Considero sumamente recomendable el trabajo voluntario —dice Campos—. Te llena y te estimula para luchar por otras personas que lo necesitan. Es bueno saber que existen millones de personas que luchan por lo mismo. Y lo más importante es que me hace sentir joven aun cuando ya no lo soy.”
