Elder Abuse Registry Available Online

By: State: Delaware | Source: AARP.org

AARP recently joined Governor Jack Markell as he announced House Bill 165, which will ultimately call for greater protections for senior citizens and Delawareans with disabilities. The bill permits the Dept. of Health and Social Services to provide online access to the names of individuals who are actively listed on the Adult Abuse Registry as a result of their abuse, neglect, or financial exploitation of the elderly.

The legislation, sponsored by Rep. Valerie Longhurst, (D, 15th District) and Senator Patricia Blevins, (D, 7th District.) and was supported by numerous advocates including AARP. It subsequently passed the Senate and was signed into law by the Governor.

“I believe senior citizens golden years should be the best years of their lives,” Governor Markell said. “This will protect our seniors and help them safely remain in their homes as they age. By allowing public access to the registry, we’re allowing the public to have peace of mind that they are doing everything possible to ensure their loved ones are safe and well cared for.”

Delaware’s aging population is growing faster than in most states. By 2030, the US population over 65 is expected to double while Delaware’s is expected to grow by almost 134 percent. Delawareans overwhelmingly express a desire to remain in their own homes and communities as they age.
