When Jose Riera arrived to teach AARP's Driver Safety Course in Spanish, he noticed something he never expected. "The class was multi-generational," noted Riera. "Many of the younger students are relatively new to this country, and have a desire to become better drivers. They were learning side-by-side with AARP members over the age of 50."
The course offering at the Latin American Community Center (LACC) in Wilmington is the result of a partnership and was introduced in winter 2007. An original goal of offering the Driver's Safety program in Spanish was to increase AARP's awareness among the Hispanic community. Riera said, "They have provided word-of-mouth to a constituency that often doesn't seek out AARP programs and services."
Riera was chosen for his extensive experience as a bilingual educator in New Jersey.
Under the leadership of Maria Matos, the Latin American Community Center seeks to empower members of the Hispanic community to become contributing members of society by offering support, programs and services to anyone that seeks assistance. From the ages of one to 101, the Centers' goal is to change lives.
The AARP Driver's Safety Program is the nation's first and largest refresher course for drivers, and has helped millions of drivers remain safe on today's roads. Over the years, the course has been expanded to include current rules of the road and how to operate your vehicle more safely in today's increasingly challenging driving environment. The course also addresses age-related issues such as changes in vision, hearing and reaction time. Many insurance companies provide a discount for AARP graduates of the course.
