Senator Carper Speaks to Members Statewide

The end of August may have been vacation time for many, but not for Senator Tom Carper. On August 31, the Senator was working hard to answer health care questions from our members from all over the First State. About 6,000 callers were on the line to ask questions or listen as the Senator discussed issues ranging from coverage for the uninsured to tort reform. Rhonda Richards, a governmental relations and policy expert from Washington, DC, also joined the call to help clarify AARP’s position on health care reform.
Several volunteers assisted the state office staff to make the tele-town hall happen smoothly. Richard Johnson, a Wilmington resident, is also a member of AARP’s national board and helped to screen incoming calls with Dennis Christie, AARP Executive Council member, and Jim Wilson, AARP advocacy volunteer.
This wasn’t the first time Senator Carper joined AARP in Delaware. Back in April, he held a roundtable discussion in Sussex County on health care issues. About 40 members, chapter leaders, and community partners took part in the two-hour session on how to improve health care access and quality in our state.
