Real Property Tax Sale Project

Helping D.C. seniors keep their homes

Don’t Lose Your Home Because of Unpaid Property Taxes

If your house has been included in a tax sale because of unpaid property taxes or other unpaid assessments or fees owed to the District of Columbia, you may be able to pay the past-due taxes and fees to “redeem” the property and save your home.

Legal help may be available if you live in the District of Columbia and are 60 years old or older.

Call Legal Counsel for the Elderly at 202-434-2120.

Don’t qualify for LCE’s services? On Wednesday mornings, the D.C. Bar’s Tax Sale Resource Center provides free legal information to self-represented homeowners and other interested parties seeking to avoid foreclosure of real property because of outstanding debts to the District of Columbia government.

Reform D.C.’s Broken Property Tax Sale System

Legal Counsel for the Elderly is a lead sponsor of AT HOME — the Alliance to Help Owners Maintain Equity. With pro bono support from Crowell & Moring LLP, Legal Counsel for the Elderly and AT HOME are working to reform the flaws in the District of Columbia’s real property tax system.

The current tax sale system deprives affected homeowners — many of whom are elderly or economically disadvantaged — of fair treatment, including constitutional protections.

LCE supports the “Residential Real Property Equity and Transparency Act of 2013” (B20-0023 pdf), a bill currently pending before the council to fix our broken real tax sale system.

Read AT HOME’s letter summarizing the major problems with the District’s tax sale system.
