Give Your Brain a Workout

Being healthy doesn’t mean just being physically fit - Exercise is as important for your mind as it is for your body.  In Connecticut, numerous programs offer fun and engaging opportunities for lifelong learning geared specifically for adults over age 50.

These programs help foster overall personal health and achievement. Intellectual stimulation is a cornerstone of ongoing good health and the prevention of disease.  They also provide an opportunity to socialize, meet other individuals with similar interests, and participate in intergenerational programs.

Below is information about some of the opportunities available in Connecticut.  Check with your local senior center, library, university or community college to find out more about these and other educational programs geared toward seniors that may be available where you live.

Senior Centers
Senior centers are an invaluable resource in Connecticut.  They provide social, educational, and recreational opportunities to enrich the mind, body and spirit of older adults.  Many senior centers offer exercise and educational classes on a variety of topics for free or a nominal fee.  Most senior centers also regularly host trips and presentations by experts that help older adults stay informed and connected.  Contact your local senior center to find out what educational opportunities are offered in your community.

Libraries
Most public libraries offer more than just books.  They have become gathering places in the community and offer a plethora of educational opportunities – everything from knitting and internet classes, to book clubs and visits by guest authors and lecturers.  Today’s public libraries offer something for everyone and are a great, economical way to keep learning no matter what your age.  Be sure to check out your nearest public library and take advantage of this great neighborhood resource.

Senior Tuition Waivers at Public Colleges and Universities
Seniors can take courses and earn degrees tuition free at Connecticut’s public colleges and universities.  Older adults age 62 and older are eligible for tuition waivers at any public college or university in the state, including the University of Connecticut, Connecticut State University and the 12 Community colleges.
Generally, waivers are available only when space exists at the end of a registration period.  Other fees, and costs for books and supplies, are not waived.  For specific details, contact the college or university of your choice.
For more information about the Senior Citizen Tuition Waiver program, how to quality and where to apply, contact the Education and Employment Information Center at the Connecticut Department of Higher Education at 800-842-0229.

Lifelong Learning Institute (LLI)
There are more than 300 Lifelong Learning Institutes affiliated with the Elderhostel Network in the United States, including many right here in Connecticut.  The programs are sponsored by local universities and community colleges and are designed as academic cooperatives that provide mature adults 50 and over with opportunities for intellectual development, cultural stimulation and social interaction. Programs are centered around classes developed and taught by members who volunteer their time and talents to share their knowledge and interests with other members. The programs also generally sponsor special events throughout the year featuring noted authors, scholars and experts in respected professional fields.
