Investor Protection Workshops with AARP & Dept. on Banking

Warren Buffett, one of the most successful stock investors ever, once said, "Risk comes from not knowing what you're doing.” AARP encourages consumer to do their homework before investing to avoid fraudulent or unsuitable investments. That’s why AARP Connecticut is teaming up with the Connecticut Department on Banking on an initiative aimed at investor protection called “The Campaign for Wise and Safe Investing.” As part of the initiative, AARP and the Department on Banking will offer a series of educational workshops across Connecticut aimed at investor protections.
The Spring/Summer workshop series begins April 29th in Forestville, CT, and runs through the end of August.

This series of small workshops taking place in libraries and senior centers around the state will lead up to a large conference on safe investing to be held Sept 24th. The focus of these workshops and the conference will be to encourage consumers to take action and protect themselves from fraudulent practices.
At the workshops investors and potential investors will:
• Learn about common scams and ways to avoid becoming a victim.
• Make informed investment decisions to protect their retirement nest egg.
• Learn how to check with the Department of Banking’s Securities Division to make sure the investment opportunity is registered and if the seller is licensed.
• Receive non-commercial investor education materials.
AARP research shows that boomer and older investors—because they have the money to invest—are natural targets for a wide range of unscrupulous marketing practices. A July 2006 survey conducted by the North American Securities Administrators Association shows that senior investment fraud accounts for nearly half of complaints received by state securities regulators.
Brenda Kelley, AARP Connecticut state director, said, “This issue is very important to our members. AARP wants to make sure older residents have the tools they need to identify fraudulent investing schemes and avoid them.”
Before investing, arm yourself with the information you need by attending an AARP Safe and Wise Investing Workshop.
