AARP Connecticut and Rebuilding Together Hartford were two of the six community partners recognized by Northside Institutions Neighborhood Alliance (NINA) at their 5th Annual Awards Ceremony May 14.

NINA was established by the CEO of The Hartford and other major corporations (AETNA, ING, Mass Mutual, Webster Bank, and Saint Francis Hospital) to lead a revitalization of the Asylum Hill neighborhood in Hartford, CT.

Since 2005, AARP CT has worked closely with NINA and other community partners to rebuild and add safety modification to 25 homes plus the local senior center. AARP also provided Benefits Quicklink screenings to the residents of Asylum Hill to connect them to state and federal benefit programs.

AARP CT received recognition as a "Livable Communities Model Partner" and for "providing volunteer support for home and safety repairs in Asylum Hill.” As part of the award ceremony, NINA showed an anniversary video that included footage of AARP’s CEO Bill Novelli’s visit to the community, AARP volunteers working in the neighborhood, and an interview with one of the homeowners AARP helped.

About 100 people attended the reception and award ceremony including CEOs, local politicians, local businesses, nonprofit organizations, and many Asylum Hill residents. After just 2 years, AARP’s livable community project has helped transform one of the poorest neighborhoods in the country back to its former glory as the neighborhood of Mark Twain, Harriet Beecher Stowe and Katharine Hepburn.
