Create the Good-Answering to the Call to Serve
By: State: Colorado | Source: AARP.org
There is a new spirit of service sweeping the country. Americans of all ages are coming together with our leaders to ensure that there are opportunities to make our nation a better place and to solve problems with citizen-powered solutions.
A Legacy of Service
Fifty years ago, Dr. Ethel Percy Andrus, a retired high school principal, founded AARP with the motto, “To serve, not to be served.” We continue to honor our founder by connecting our members and engaging them and their networks in a wide range of opportunities to serve others.
Creating the Good
Visit AARP's Create the Good website to find more than 250 opportunities to get involved in activities that help their neighbors and communities—whether they have 5 minutes or 5 hours. Through Create the Good—both online and on-the-ground—Americans can connect a network of people, tools, and ideas to help them make a difference in their communities.
Create The Good expands on traditional ways to volunteer by exploring simple steps, time flexible opportunities, and a wide variety of issues to get involved in.
How Can I Create The Good? Here are some ideas:
Download the free Operation Energy Save toolkit to weatherize homes in your community;
Use your financial skills to help people in need prepare their taxes;
Teach a driver safety course to help keep our streets safe;
Start a walking group with your friends to stay healthy;
Write a letter to your elected officials about an issue that is important
to your family;
Assess a neighbor’s home for safety concerns with our handy checklists;
Help a jobseeker assess their skills, update their resume, and prepare for interviews; or
Use our tools to help someone in need file for benefits or plan for retirement needs.
As part of our commitment to volunteer and civic engagement, AARP has taken a leading role in ServiceNation, a national campaign bringing together more than 120 organizations, businesses and leaders to engage millions of Americans in national and community service.
