Are you Aware of the New Scam Targeting older Coloradans?

By: State: Colorado | Source: AARP.org

Are you aware of the new scam targeting older Coloradans? Protect yourself and find out how Colorado ElderWatch is leading the efforts to protect older adults!

Older adults are victims of financial frauds and scams everyday and especially in these tough economic times when consumers might be more desperate for extra money, their vulnerability increases. The latest scam perpetrating seniors in Colorado is the "Grandma, it's me" scam. The scam works like this: the phone rings and an unsuspecting senior answers to a highly excited individual who states, "Hi Grandma/Grandpa it's me", the senior will reply with "Oh Johnny, what's wrong?", at that point the scammer will pretend to be "grandson Johnny" and say they are in trouble and need money wired immediately to them for bail or a hospital bill. This is a financially and emotionally devastating scam, and it needs to be stopped now! With the addition of our new program, ElderWatch is making a difference.

AARP ElderWatch is excited to announce the addition of a new consumer protection program to their Denver, Colorado office—The Foundation's Consumer Fraud Prevention efforts educate older consumers about how to protect themselves and others in their community from fraud and identity theft. These efforts engage peer volunteers to alert older consumers about types of fraud to prevent endangering their financial security. Information on how to recognize scams, how to report fraud, and how to keep personal information safe is given through direct calls to potential victims and through community education events.
