In Colorado, 28,185 children are living in relative-headed households. A total of 70,555 Colorado children are living in households headed by a relative, with 73 percent of these children living in households headed by at least one grandparent caregiver, according to The Brookdale Foundation.

In Denver alone, approximately 12,000 children are in their grandparents' care. Most of these children are victims of crime due to intra-family abuse, neglect or parental abandonment.

To assist these grandparent caregivers with the special challenges they face in family stabilization, The Denver Center for Crime Victims' Child, Youth and Family and Kinship Care Provider programs partner to sponsor an ongoing, free support program and seminars for kinship care providers.

The program seeks to address the challenges Kinship Care Providers face as primary caregivers, while offering information and a commitment to wellness for the individuals who participate.

Workshops address issues such as:

  • How to keep children safe from gangs
  • How to recognize drugs and drug use
  • Parenting skills for the new millennium
  • Healthy nutrition
  • Childhood immunizations
  • Enrolling in public schools
  • Governmental benefits
  • Custody and other legal issues

In addition, two-hour seminars on specific topics are offered monthly. Seminar topics have included self-care for kinship providers, parenting after trauma, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and summer planning for kids, to name just a few.

In addition to sponsoring support groups, DCCV's Kinship Care Program utilizes a uniquely holistic approach to trauma recovery and trauma stabilization by offering comprehensive and coordinated trauma recovery services that educate, support and nurture kinship care providers. Workshops are held throughout the year and again, are free to anyone in a kinship care relationship.
