California: Health Care Reform

AARP believes that everyone has a right to quality, affordable health care when they need it, regardless of age or preexisting condition. But for too many Californians, this is an elusive goal. Millions of Californians who currently have health care coverage are afraid of losing it, or of their premiums becoming unaffordable. That's why, in 2007, AARP launched a statewide campaign to tell our elected officials to work together to enact real health care reform in California.

Last January, Governor Schwarzenegger unveiled a comprehensive proposal to ensure all Californians access to quality, affordable health care. Assembly Speaker Nunez and Senate President Pro Tem Perata followed suit introducing health care reform proposals in the summer months.

During an extended legislative session, the State Assembly passed a comprehensive healthcare reform bill, AB x1 1. As of this report, the bill still must pass the California State Senate with a proposed hearing date of Jan. 16.

Funding the proposal is an additional hurdle. A measure to pay for health care reform is through the initiative process and targeted for the November 2008 ballot.

Thanks to the help of many, we gained ground in 2007 but the fight for health care reform continues.

AARP still believes the time for health care reform is now. We still need your voices. Your elected officials need to hear from YOU. Let them know that they must work together to achieve real health care solutions.

There are several ways you can get involved:
