AARP has a number of priorities and programs, but each has a common goal: helping Alabamians get the most out of life at any age. But, to do that, there must be a balance between physical health, spiritual satisfaction, financial security and intellectual fulfillment, among other things.
With that in mind, AARP joined with the Alabama Cooperative Extension System and the Bureau of Geriatric Psychology to host Successful Aging workshops throughout the state.
During the day-long events, workshops are held on topics ranging from rethinking the process of aging to creating mini-memory books, each designed improve aging in Alabama.
At a recent Successful Aging event in Bessemer, Deidra Lemons, AARP Alabama associate state director for community outreach, led workshops on “Medicines Made Easy” and “Healthy Senior Lifestyles.”
Lemons said, “Many people are aware of AARP’s work to ensure that our members have access to the healthcare and medicines they need, and to the knowledge to safely and correctly use them. But, what some people might not know is that we also believe a healthy lifestyle is the best preventative medicine available, so we also talk about ways to stay healthy and avoid unnecessary illnesses and diseases,” Lemons said.
The events are free and are open to the public. Events are planned throughout the state in August and September, including Decatur, Montgomery, Huntsville/Madison County, Mobile and Florence.
