Consumer Issues on Long Island: An AARP Survey

In February 2006, when the New York State Attorney General's office released a list of the top 10 consumer complaints for the state, telecommunications issues ranked in the top five. This telephone survey of 800 AARP New York members on Long Island finds that of those interviewed...

  • 82 percent support a law that would give consumers the right to terminate their cellular phone service up to 15 days after receiving their first bill

  • 82 percent support a law requiring cell phone providers to tell new consumers where their cell phone service is and is not "e-911" compatible

  • 62 percent are concerned about identity theft

  • 86 percent support security freeze legislation to allow consumers to place a password or PIN number on their credit reports to prevent unauthorized access to their personal information

This report is part of a larger telephone survey assessing Long Island AARP members' thoughts on consumer issues.
