Age Discrimination In The Workplace: A 2001 Survey Of Utah Residents Age 40+

By: Jennifer H. Sauer, M.A., AARP Knowledge Management | January 28, 2005

Undertaken to assess public awareness of age discrimination in the workplace, among Utah residents age 40 and older, this random telephone survey found that three-quarters of the 806 people interviewed support revising the state's current age discrimination law to protect all employees, including those who work for an employer with fewer than 15 employees, and over a third would vote for a candidate who supports expanding the law.
Among other findings:

  • Age discrimination in the workplace is an issue recognized by older Utahns.
  • Utahns clearly feel that older workers should not be forced to retire because of age or to open up jobs for younger workers.
  • Most agree that most employers discriminate against older workers.
  • Some 4 in 10 have experienced at least one form of workplace age discrimination.

Survey interviews were conducted between October 17 and 24, 2001 and the report prepared by Jennifer H. Sauer of AARP Knowledge Management. (25 pages)
