AARP in Your State: Virgin IslandsThe current physical fitness activities of AARP Virgin Islands members and the fitness programs that most appeal to them are examined in this AARP survey designed to determine the best ways to encourage older Virgin Islanders to become more physically active.
Of those surveyed...
- 69 percent are actively involved in physical activity on a weekly basis.
- 46 percent of the physically active report engaging in activities by themselves and another 20 percent indicate they engage in activities alone as much as with others.

- 25 percent report they are not currently active; however, 9 percent of them say they intend to become active in the future.
- 46 percent of the not active have no health condition that prevents them from engaging in physical activities, but 22 percent of the not active do have one or more such conditions.
- 43% of the not active say they don't like to participate in physical activities alone, and 34 percent say there is no place in their neighborhood to participate in physical activities.
- more than half would like AARP Virgin Islands to sponsor nutrition (57%) and physical activity classes (55%) in their communities, and 37% express an interest in AARP-sponsored sports and recreation training.
