AARP Members' Opinions

Caregiving in South Dakota

Research Report

July 2005

AARP MEMBER OPINION RESEARCH: There are an estimated 100,000 family caregivers in South Dakota, providing an estimated 76.8 million hours of support valued at $676.9 million each year. The types of care provided - in some cases, at significant personal cost - range from companionship and helping with chores to help with bathing and feeding.

To more fully understand their challenges and needs, this survey generates a demographic profile of South Dakota caregivers and the individuals in their care while exploring their usage of and need for caregiver support services and information. Specifically, it examines:

  • Impact of the caregiving experience on caregivers' employment status
  • Physical and mental problems common among care recipients
  • Types of tasks performed by caregivers
  • How stressful the caregiving experience is
  • Where caregivers turn for assistance
  • What information caregivers would find useful in managing their caregiving responsibilities

The sample for this 2005 mail survey consisted of 2,000 of AARP South Dakota's 90,377 members ages 50 to 65 plus an additional 79 members who had previously requested information from AARP about caregiving. A total of 1,337 members responded. Further information about the survey may be obtained by contacting Dr. Silberman at 202-434-6339. (30 pages)
