AARP Members' Opinions

AARP Pennsylvania Legislative Issues Survey Executive Summary: Long-Term Care Issues

Research Report

October 2004

AARP MEMBER OPINION RESEARCH: How 1,197 randomly selected Pennsylvania AARP members feel about long-term care (LTC) and nursing homes are explored in this mail survey conducted from April through June 2003.

Of those surveyed, most think it would be difficult to find LTC they could afford, and support advocacy for programs designed to allow people to stay in their own homes as they age.

  • Four in 10 would prefer that they or a family member stay in their own home with the help of a nurse should the need for LTC arise.

  • Over a third would prefer to use services offered in a residential facility such as assisted living.

  • Cost is the top reason they do not purchase LTC insurance.

The report was prepared by Anita M. Stowell-Ritter of AARP Knowledge Management who may be contacted at 202/434-6205 for further information. (13 pages)
