Perceptions and Opinions of Long-Term Care: A Survey of AARP Members in Pennsylvania

AARP MEMBER OPINION RESEARCH: This mail survey, conducted by AARP in April-June 2003, investigated the views of 1,197 AARP members in Pennsylvania concerning long term care and related issues. Some of the key findings are as follows:
- Most Pennsylvania members have not discussed their preferences for long term care with family members.
- Most of the members think it would be difficult to find long-term care they could afford.
- Most of the members support AARP's advocacy for programs designed to allow people to stay in their own homes as they age.
- About 7 in 10 Pennsylvania members are not confident they would be able to afford the cost of nursing home care for even 1 year.
- Cost is the top reason the members do not purchase long-term care insurance.
