AARP International Forum on Long-Term Care
International Approaches to Financing and Delivery
Retaining independence and control over one’s life is a major concern for people of all ages. Understanding that now is the time to look for better approaches to long-term care in the United States, AARP convened an International Forum to hear from Health Ministers, senior health officials and international experts representing Australia, Germany, Japan, New Zealand, and The Netherlands. The international forum was an opportunity to hear how other nations are providing options for independent living to older persons and persons with disabilities and how countries are addressing access, cost, and quality issues through growth in community-based services, consumer-directed care, universal public programs, and other approaches and best practices.
In conjunction with the forum, the AARP Public Policy Institute released three reports examining many of the key long-term care policy issues that cross national boundaries in developed nations. In addition, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) presented its preliminary findings of the 2004 Long-Term Care study spanning 19 countries.
