AARP Vermont Member Survey: Long-Term Care

Research Report

February 2003

AARP MEMBER OPINION RESEARCH: Findings from the long-term care section of the AARP Vermont Member Survey which covered a variety of legislative issues and concerns.

Of the 1,120 randomly sampled AARP members in Vermont participating in the mail survey during August and September 2002...

  • most would prefer to receive long-term care at home, and 93 percent consider it important to have services that would enable them or a family member to stay at home as long as possible
  • 81 percent say it is important to them that the state provide funding to make home-based and community-based services more widely available, even if doing so requires an increase in state taxes
  • 85 percent would support a consumer tax on beer, wine, and other alcoholic beverages in Vermont in order to ensure adequate funding for long-term care services for older adults in the state
  • 91 percent support using a portion of the money generated by a recent cigarette tax increase to fund health and long-term care services in the state
