AARP in Your State: South DakotaAARP MEMBER OPINION RESEARCH: To learn more about the concerns, interests, and legislative issues of AARP members in South Dakota, a random sample of 929 South Dakota members were surveyed by mail with the following results:
- South Dakota members are extremely concerned about having
access to affordable prescription drugs, making sure their
pension benefits or retirement savings are safe and secure, and
finding affordable, high quality health insurance.
- Their top legislative priorities are the affordability of
prescription drugs; the availability, cost, and quality of health
care; and the ability to stay in their own homes as they
age.
- They support the state changing its law to allow individuals who qualify to receive Social Security and full unemployment benefits simultaneously, and think it is important for AARP South Dakota to work to bring this about. Among those for whom this issue would affect their voting, almost twice as many say they would be more likely to vote for a candidate supporting a change to the law as would be more likely to vote against such a candidate.
The survey was conducted between February and April 2004 by FGI, Inc., and the report prepared by Susan L. Silberman, Ph.D., and Cassandra Burton, both of AARP Knowledge Management. (42 pages)
