New York Assisted Living Facility Survey

More than 75% of age 50+ New Yorkers support six legislative initiatives that would ensure consumer protection and quality care for residents in assisted living facilities in that state. Specifically, those surveyed for this AARP study voiced support for
- requiring facilities with special care environments for people with Alzheimer's or other forms of dementia to meet specific standards (91%)
- giving assisted living residents the right to appeal decisions (88%)
- overseeing all assisted living facilities (87%)
- requiring standardized written contracts to specify lease terms and services (84%)
- making assisted living more affordable (83%)
- making all assisted living facilities follow the same rules (78%)
However, some 60% of respondents are not confident that they could afford the cost of care in an assisted living facility. The telephone survey of 703 New Yorkers age 50 and older was conducted by Zogby International between December 14 and 18, 2000. Rachelle Cummins of AARP Knowledge Management analyzed the data and wrote the report. (22 pages)
