Hawai'i Care Homes: An AARP Survey
Research Report

February 2002
AARP MEMBER OPINION RESEARCH: Care homes are businesses located in homes in residential communities. They agree to provide a wide range of services to their residents. Some provide nursing care while others provide a place to live and some help with daily living activities such as bathing and dressing.
This survey examines the degree of AARP member support for advocacy to improve the quality of Hawaii's adult residential care homes. Specifically, the survey measures a key provision of the Hawai'i Department of Health's administrative rule permitting unannounced inspections of adult care homes to ensure the quality of care and protect the residents. Of the AARP members surveyed
- Nearly nine in ten strongly support permitting unannounced
inspections in care homes. They still support this regulation
even if it were to result in some care homes closing.
- About eight in ten believe that protecting residents of care
homes is a top or high priority for AARP.
- Three in four would be more likely to vote for a candidate for state office if that candidate supports protecting residents of care homes.
The telephone survey of 801 AARP members in Hawai'i was conducted between May 2 and May 20, 2001. The report was written by Rachelle Cummins of AARP Knowledge Management who may be contacted for further information at 202/434-6297 (13 pages).
