Consumer Perspectives on Private Versus Shared Accommodations in Assisted Living Settings

Research Report

August 1998

This thirty-six-page study, by Rosalie A. Kane, Mary Olsen Baker, and Wendy Veazie of the National LTC Resource Center, School of Public Health, University of Minnesota; and Jennifer Salmon of the Florida Policy Exchange Center on Aging, University of South Florida, examines consumer attitudes toward private and shared accommodations in assisted living settings. Through comprehensive literature review, quantitative studies and first-hand accounts from assisted living facility residents, their relatives and staff, it reveals a decided consumer preference for private accommodations. The study presents an inventory of privacy issues for assisted living that should be useful to consumers, providers, and policy decision makers.
