FYI: Characteristics of Uninsured and Underinsured 50- to 64-Year-Olds

Research Report

May 2007

More than one in every four adults age 50-64 either has no health insurance or lacks adequate health insurance. If this is to change, proposals to improve access to health coverage must take into account the economic and social characteristics unique to those in this age group who are uninsured or underinsured, and recognize that insurance outside the traditional employer-based group model is often prohibitively costly for this age group, if it is available at all.

These AARP Public Policy Institute papers provide a snapshot of the employment status, income, out-of-pocket health expenditures, health status, and health spending burdens of the uninsured and underinsured.
