AARP Pledges to Fight Following National Do Not Call List Ruling

News Release

September 26, 2003

AARP is extremely disappointed with the U.S. District Court rulings preventing consumers from taking full advantage of the FTC's national "do not call" list. However, we are encouraged by the swift action of the Congress to attempt to rectify this problem and maintain the registry.

We are also pleased that the FTC has responded to the ruling by petitioning for a stay and appealing the decision in order to restore the rights of some 50 million consumers who have already signed up for the list.

AARP will continue to work with federal authorities and do whatever it takes – including legal action – to ensure that the Registry is restored, implemented and enforced.

The national "Do Not Call" registry has been a benchmark of AARP's advocacy efforts in this area. It is a victory for consumers who have long lamented the nuisance created by unwanted telemarketing calls and for those who have been frightened and victimized by telemarketing fraud. Most importantly, this effort will put control of the telephone back where it belongs – with the consumer.
