AARP in Your State: OregonAs is the case with many of their fellow Oregonians, health and financial security are foremost among the concerns of the state’s 500,000 AARP members of whom 79 percent say they always vote in state elections. This telephone survey of AARP members gauges their opinions about specific state issues which may be reflected in their votes.
Of those surveyed...
- 87 percent view maintaining adequate levels of funding for health services to children, mental health programs and long-term care services as highly important even if they personally are not eligible for these services
- 59 percent believe there is not enough money in the state budget to meet the need and ensure quality for health care service programs
- 68 percent support increasing the cigarette tax to generate funds for health and long-term care services
- 84 percent favor increasing the state tax rate on six-packs of beer to help maintain mental health services
- 74 percent support a property tax credit program for lower-income taxpayers when their property taxes reach a particular percentage of their incomes
- 79 percent would support a property tax credit program that would help only low-income seniors
- 76 percent favor an interest rate cap on consumer loans of less than $50,000
