AARP is bringing its fourth annual Life @ 50+ AARP's National Event & Expo to Las Vegas, October 14-16, 2004. This national event for AARP members and guests promises to have something for everyone with Maya Angelou, one of the great voices of contemporary literature opening with the musical satirical group, The Capitol Steps, and continuing throughout the three days with named speakers including Dave Barry, Roger Ebert, Danny Glover, Corretta Scott-King, and Jerry Lewis, to name a few. The entertainment line up features one of Motown's most enduring stars, Smokey Robinson, the comedy team - The Smothers Brothers, and leading song writer and performer James Taylor.
Nearly 20,000 AARP members from all over the United States will flock to this popular destination, Las Vegas to the Sands Expo Convention Center, adjacent to The Venetian Hotel, for three days of fun and excitement that will feature top-notch entertainment; interactive exhibits; and lifestyle, education and feature sessions with noted experts and celebrities.
With over 300 exhibitors there will be Interactive exhibits found in the AARP Pavilion, new and future technologies, travel and leisure destinations, and a host of other products and services - all under one roof! Participate in morning fitness warm-ups and intergenerational activities with your family and explore energy centers focused on health and advocacy. There will be music, fitness, and fun for all.
Thursday, October 14
AARP will open the festivities with Maya Angelou captivating everyone lyrically with vigor, fire and perception. Also featured will be The Capitol Steps, who will bring their special satirical humor featuring the latest headlines and politics of the day. The doors will open with more than 200,000 square feet of exhibit space with something for everyone. Lifestyle sessions begin with Roger Ebert kicking off AARP Celebrates Cinema sessions; Hallmark Writers on Tour, Dr. Barry Bittman, well-known neurologist, author, international speaker, award-winning producer/director and inventor; and feature session with admired actor, comedian, director, producer, teacher and humanitarian Jerry Lewis. Opening day ends with a "Welcome to Las Vegas" party featuring music and treats.
Friday, October 15
The day begins with morning fitness with Kathy Kaehler, NBC's Today Show fitness expert. The exhibit hall opens at 9:00 a.m. and the first feature session will introduce AARP's third 2011 council led by famed movie star Cybill Shepherd. The Council, launched in 2002 will remain in existence through 2011 and is a unique blend of political, academic, social and cultural expertise of diverse individuals who are now or have previously placed their imprint upon the American fabric and the baby boomer generation. Lifestyle sessions include The Consumer WatchDog with Arnold Diaz, a veteran New York television journalist; The Joy of Gardening led by lecturer and horticulture expert Linn Mills; Achieving Healthier and Safer Medical Care Results with Dr. Reed Tuckson, Senior Vice President, UnitedHealth Group; Making Sense of Supplements with Annette Dickinson, Ph.D., Roger Williams, MD, Brent Bailey, Patricia Knight and Peter Reinecke; and feature session with Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Dave Barry sharing his unique perspective on life. The evening ends with Mirth and Motown featuring The Smothers Brothers and Smokey Robinson.
Saturday, October 16
Open the day with In Balance Yoga led by famous actress Mariel Hemingway and plan to attend the closing show featuring seven time Emmy Award-Winner Mary Tyler Moore. Lifestyle sessions continue with a special session Staying Sharp–Advances in Brain Research; Making the Most of Your Money with Jane Bryant Quinn, the nation's leading commentator on personal finance; The History of Beer in America led by Dr. Bill Vollmar, corporate historian at Anheuser-Busch; and The Joy of Home Decorating led by The Learning Channel's Trading Spaces designer Frank Bielec. And feature sessions will be conducted by Coretta Scott King discussing Fifty Years After Brown vs. Board of Education: Where Have We Been and Where are We Going; and a look at Voices of Civil Rights, a joint project of AARP and the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights with famed actor Danny Glover, Dr. Dorothy Height, famed civil rights activist and Congressional Gold Medal Winner, and Yaul Yzaguirre, recognized civil rights leader and President, National Council of La Raza. The evening concert - Sweet Baby James–An Evening with James Taylor.
All Three Days
Each afternoon throughout the three-day event, the AARP University will offer attendees engaging sessions to learn more about the issues important to them and AARP. These include: YOU have The Power to Make It Better! (Volunteering); How To Turn Your $12.50 into $2004 and More (Member Value); Legal Importation of Prescription Drugs: Canada, Mexico and EU; Voice of the Member Forum; Re-Careering: Finding a Job For The Rest Of Your Life; AARP and Rx; Keep Your Good Name Good: Protecting Against Identity Theft; How To Relate To Your Grandchildren; Health and Nutrition: Staying Hale and Hearty @ 50+; Sexuality Today: Trends and Attitudes (with Dr. Ruth); Viva Las Computers!; and Retirement and Social Security.
Additionally, the exhibit hall will be open daily and will showcase health and fitness, personal finance, advocacy, travel and entertainment and community service. As part of the AARP Celebrates Cinema back by popular demand for the second year, AARP will show feature length films, as well as some shorts, from independent and foreign film makers throughout the three-day event.
Life@50+ AARP's National Event & Expo is open to member, friends and family. Members and non-members can register by fax or mail or on-line through www.aarp.org/events or call the toll free number, 800-883-2784 and for international callers, 972-349-7613. Special rates are available for exhibit, program and entertainment packages starting at $10 for members and $20 for non-members for the daytime program. Concert tickets are available at $40 for preferred seating and $20 for reserved seating for one concert or a two concert option is available at $65 for preferred seating and $40 for reserved seating. Additionally, attendees can sign up for several optional tours to experience Las Vegas. These include Grand Canyon Deluxe Air Tour, Legend of Las Vegas City Tour, Mirage Secret Gardens, Hoover Dam, Red Rock Canyon, and others.
