AARP Announces Reorganization of Publications Group

News Release

March 13, 2003

AARP today announced several changes in its Publications Group to position it for future growth, maximize resources, and broaden AARP's reach through new offerings such as books, newsletters and special issues.

"With these changes, AARP will be poised to deliver a new level of services to members and the 50+ market," said Linda McCutcheon, AARP Director of Publications. "It's another step toward realizing AARP's commitment to making life better for people 50 and over," she said.

McCutcheon named Hugh Delehanty Editor-in-Chief of AARP Publications. In his new role, Delehanty, formerly editorial director, will assume overall editorial oversight of AARP's publications—AARP The Magazine, AARP Bulletin, Segunda Juventud, and NRTA Live & Learn. NRTA is the nation's largest group of 50+ educators.

Segunda Juventud and NRTA Live & Learn, recent additions to the AARP family of publications, offer added value to AARP members. Launched just over a year ago, Segunda Juventud is a Spanish language quarterly serving AARP's Spanish-speaking members. NRTA Live & Learn is a brand new thought-provoking quarterly publication for AARP's educator community.

In his new position, Delehanty will play a key role in the development of brand extensions. A new editor will be appointed to oversee the day-to-day operation of AARP The Magazine.

Jim Fishman will remain Group Publisher, directing ad sales and marketing of all four publications. Based in New York, with sales representatives throughout the country, Fishman and his staff have been responsible for significantly increasing market understanding of boomer buying habits and the 50+ population as a whole.

John Condit, interim Director of Business Operations and formerly Production Director, will permanently direct Business Operations. He will have overall responsibility for production, finance, human resources, and all other administrative functions. Condit will select a new production director to oversee the manufacturing of all publications.

Rick Bowers will become Director of New Product Development and Digital Media. In this expanded role he will be responsible for the publications' web sites as well as strategic alliances with new publishing partners.

Effective June 1, AARP's Publications Group will reduce its editorial staff in New York and add new positions in Washington, D.C. Group Design Director Carl Lehmann-Haupt, will continue to oversee the design of the publications and future brand extensions. He and a small staff will remain in New York.
