The cost of prescription drugs can create financial burdens for many older Americans, particularly those with low incomes. To ease the financial burden of prescription drugs for this population, a number of states have implemented pharmacy assistance programs that are designed to help the non-Medicaid low income population to obtain the medications they need but cannot afford. For each state that has a drug assistance program, this 23-page Issue Paper by David Gross and Sharon Bee of the Public Policy Institute, describes: (1) target population and income eligibility requirements; (2) coverage levels; (3) reimbursement policies; and (4) enrollment.
