Clara Laird, 86, was living with dementia in a Southern California nursing home when her husband of nearly 70 years allegedly shot and killed her Sunday.

Family and friends called it an act of love – he’d spent years taking care of his ailing wife. The couple’s daughter said it was a "mercy killing."

As many can attest, caring for a declining loved one is stressful – especially if he or she has Alzheimer’s.
