Age in Place More Successfully

Have you ever needed to stay in the hospital or rehabilitation facility for a while? Have you ever had to care for someone who has? Was your transition back home difficult? AARP supports a recent effort from the Division of Health and Social Services to make home care easier and better.

AARP Delaware partnered with Delaware’s Health and Social Services Division and pother collaborators to ensure passage of funding to create a new role in Delaware – Home and Community Based Services Ombudsman. This new position offers a liaison for those needing home and community based services (HCBS) as they transition back to their homes from a nursing home or other facility, and enhance their quality of life.

HCBS service can include healing a broken hip, physical therapy, mental health issues, occupational therapy, and other areas.

Our new HCBS Ombudsman is Gail Weinberg. She is Delaware’s primary advocate for consumers who receive HCBS from providers who are licensed to offer those services in the First States. Weinberg has extensive work experience in long-term care with a psychiatric institution and the Massachusetts Dept. of Mental Health.

AARP in Delaware considers the Ombudsman a valuable resource. A recent AARP Delaware survey, The Road Ahead, showed that over 90 percent of Delawareans of all ages will want to remain in their homes as they age. The boomer population is aging rapidly, and both they and their caregivers will want and need a range of supports to allow better care in on’e own home.

“Most agree that at home is where you are happiest, and where you can heal and age more easily,” says Jeanne Nutter, AARP State President. “People should remain close to their social networks, family, friends and doctors with whom they feel more comfortable. This is the first step to helping make successfully aging a greater reality in Delaware.”
